The experience
The boat leaves from Caye Caulker and reaches the marine reserve one mile offshore in minutes. Each of the five stops lets you see a different part of the reef ecosystem: coral formations and the fish that live in them at Coral Gardens, rays and sharks in the channel at Shark Ray Alley, the tarpons and pelicans that gather at Tarpon Town, and the seahorses sheltering in the shallows at Seahorse City. You get 30 minutes in the water at each site, which is enough time to move around and look without feeling rushed.
Snorkeling equipment (mask, fins and snorkel) is included, so you only need to bring yourself and a swimsuit. Bottled water comes with the tour. The guide speaks English and stays with the group throughout, pointing out what to look for and answering questions between stops. Children from age one are welcome, though infants must sit on an adult's lap during the boat ride.
