The experience
Two hours walking through San Pedro with a guide who knows the place means you move at your own pace and stop when something catches your attention. The Gallery of San Pedro is the first stop: over 2,500 Belizean paintings, hundreds of handmade masks and carvings, plus hammocks, gourmet pies and traditional bread. Your guide explains what makes each piece matter to the artists and the community, not just what it is.
San Pedro Church sits next on the route, and its history is the kind of story that sticks. Built in the early 20th century, it faced the Caribbean Sea until a 1942 hurricane tore it down. The town rebuilt it in 1949, only to have another hurricane destroy it again in 1961. It took until 1977 for the community to finish rebuilding it themselves through fundraising. Walking past it with someone who knows why it matters to people who live here is different from passing it alone. The chocolate shop rounds out the walk. You can browse bars, truffles, cookies, soaps and cocoa powder, or ask about chocolate-making classes if you want to try making something yourself.
The guide speaks English and keeps the group small because it's private. Just your people. You'll hear about Carnaval traditions, the Madonna connection, and the legends tucked into the streets and buildings. Public transportation options are nearby if you need them to reach the meeting point.

Top questions
What is the Gallery of San Pedro, and what can I actually see there?
The Gallery of San Pedro holds over 2,500 Belizean paintings, hundreds of handmade masks and carvings, along with hammocks, blankets, gourmet pies and traditional bread: the largest selection of Belizean art in the country, founded 30 years ago by a local artist.
Why is San Pedro Church significant to the town?
San Pedro Church was built in the early 20th century and became the pride of the town, but hurricanes destroyed it in 1942 and again in 1961. The community rebuilt it themselves through fundraising, finishing in 1977, so it stands as a symbol of local resilience.
What's the story about "La Isla Bonita" and San Pedro?
San Pedro was the inspiration for Madonna's hit song "La Isla Bonita," and your guide will explain the real story behind how the town connected to that famous track.
Is this tour suitable if I'm visiting San Pedro for the first time?
Yes, the tour is designed for first-time visitors who want to understand what makes San Pedro unique, with a guide who shares the traditions, legends and history woven through the streets and buildings.
Can I do chocolate-making activities during the tour?
The chocolate shop is a stop on the tour where you can browse chocolate products. Chocolate-making classes are available there, though they would be arranged separately outside the main tour.
