A full day on your own boat inside Belize's barrier reef, catching snapper, grouper, mackerel and jacks.

A private fishing charter in Placencia puts you on your own boat for six hours inside Belize's barrier reef, where you choose between trolling or anchored spin casting near the flats and drop fishing grounds. Your captain handles the boat and cleans the catch. You pick the fishing style, the spots to work, and whether to stop at King Lewey's Island for lunch and drinks before returning to the dock.

The experience

Belize's barrier reef is one of the Caribbean's premier fishing grounds, and this charter gives you access to it without sharing the boat. Your captain knows the reef's productive zones and will take you to spots where snapper, grouper, mackerel, jacks and barracuda hold. You decide the approach: troll the deeper edges or anchor near the flats to drop fish or cast spinning gear. The boat comes rigged with tackle and bait, and all the gear stays on board. You bring nothing but your fishing sense.

Six hours is enough to work multiple spots and adapt to what's biting. Midway through, you can pull into King Lewey's Island Resort to buy lunch and drinks, or skip it and fish straight through. Whatever you catch, your captain cleans it on the boat, and you can take it to any local restaurant in Placencia to have them cook it for dinner. Pickup and drop-off happen at the M-n-M Gas Station/Lagoon Dock, and the boat has a canopy to keep the sun off while you're working the water.

The charter runs with captains who fish these waters regularly and speak English or Spanish. Bottled water is on board. Because you're booking the entire boat, the itinerary is yours to shape. If a spot isn't producing, move. If you want to stay longer at one location, you can.
