The experience

The tour starts with pickup from your hotel and moves through Belize City's busiest streets: Freetown Road first, where local shops and eateries line the blocks and the everyday pulse of the city is on full display. You'll pass the Belize City Swing Bridge, the only manually operated swing bridge still in use in the Americas, and see it spanning the Haulover Creek below. The guide points out the stories behind each stop: the Baron Bliss Lighthouse, a white-and-red structure near the waterfront built in honor of one of Belize's most generous benefactors. St. John's Cathedral, the oldest Anglican church in Central America, built in the early 1800s with bricks brought as ballast from Europe; and the Supreme Court's colonial-era building with its clock tower overlooking Battlefield Park.

North Front Street, one of the city's oldest roads, shows colonial-style buildings and views of the creek. Battlefield Park itself sits in the heart of the city, a historic gathering ground with shaded benches and surrounding colonial architecture.
