The experience
The tour departs San Ignacio at 7:30 a.m., crossing into Guatemala and arriving at Tikal by mid-morning. Your guide leads the day tour through the site's major structures and plazas for 3.5 to 4 hours. Lunch follows, then you check into the Tikal Inn jungle lodge and spend the afternoon at your own pace: many travelers use the pool to rest before the evening activity.
At 4:00 p.m. your guide picks you up for the sunset tour, climbing one of Tikal's biggest structures to watch daylight fade over the canopy. Dinner comes after, and you settle in for an early night. The real draw arrives at 3:30 a.m.: you rise for coffee and hike to one of the highest structures in darkness, reaching it as dawn breaks. The sunrise itself is not guaranteed (weather and cloud cover often obscure it), but the experience of the forest waking up is the point. Howler monkeys roar, birds sing, and the wildlife emerges: cuatimundi, wild pigs, foxes and, if you're fortunate, jaguars. After breakfast at the lodge, your guide drives you back to San Ignacio, arriving by 10:30 a.m.
The two-night structure lets you absorb Tikal's scale and atmosphere in ways a single day cannot. You see the site in daylight, watch it transform at dusk, and experience the forest's most active hours at dawn: three different Tikal's in one package.

Is this one for you?The 3:30 a.m. start and multi-hour hikes demand a moderate fitness level and comfort with early mornings, but they're what put you on Tikal's highest structures when the forest is most active and the site is quietest.
