The experience
How do you actually understand what happened on a battlefield 200 years ago? A guide who was there that morning can't tell you, but someone who knows the ground, the decisions, and the human stakes can make the difference between walking past a field and standing where it mattered. Your private guide meets you at your hotel in Brussels, and the two of you travel in a luxury Mercedes with a chauffeur, so the guide stays focused on the story while someone else handles the road. No group means no schedule beyond your own pace and interests: if you want to spend an extra twenty minutes on the tactics Wellington used to hold Hougoumont, or on the Prussian arrival that turned the day, the guide adapts.
The tour covers five key stops. You start at the Wellington Museum, the former inn where the British commander set up his headquarters on the eve of battle and wrote his victory dispatch. From there, you move to the Memorial 1815, an underground museum at the foot of the Lion's Mound with a 4D film, then climb the 226 steps of the Lion's Mound itself: a 40-meter hill built as a monument to the Allied victory, with a view across the entire battlefield from the top. Hougoumont Farm, the fortified position that became the focal point of the fiercest fighting, shows you where British and allied troops held off repeated French assaults. You also stop in the village of Plancenoit, where the Prussian arrival shifted the balance, and at Napoleon's Last Headquarters, the Ferme du Caillou, where the Emperor spent the night of 17–18 June planning the final assault. All museum and monument entrance tickets are included.
The tour runs 4 to 5 hours, and the Mercedes carries WiFi and bottled water. Hotel pickup and drop-off are included, so you don't arrange transport to the battlefield or back. Your guide speaks English, Spanish, or French, depending on what you book.

What exactly is the Lion's Mound, and why is it worth climbing?
The Lion's Mound is a 40-meter hill built as a monument to the Allied victory over Napoleon, standing at the center of the battlefield. Climbing the 226 steps takes you to a panoramic view of the entire Waterloo ground, so you can see the terrain and the distances the armies covered on 18 June 1815.
Was Hougoumont Farm really the key to Wellington's victory?
Hougoumont Farm was heavily fortified and became the focal point of intense fighting throughout the battle. Napoleon saw it as a weak point in Wellington's defenses and launched repeated attacks, but British and allied troops, including the Coldstream Guards and Nassau troops, successfully defended it. The fierce combat there tied up significant French forces and weakened their overall assault, which is why it was key to Wellington's victory.
Do I need to be fit to do this tour?
The tour is suitable for all physical fitness levels. The main physical element is climbing the 226 steps of the Lion's Mound. If you prefer not to climb, you can stay at the base and your guide can describe the view from the top.
