The Experience

We kicked off the Ghent beer guided walking tour right inside this old whisky and beer bar — walls darkened by time, shelves crowded with bottles I’d never heard of. Our guide, Pieter, handed out these little glasses (which he called “tasting size but still dangerous”) and we tried our first local brew. I could smell warm malt before even sipping. There was music somewhere in the background — not loud, just enough to make it feel like someone’s living room. It was raining outside but nobody cared; we were already laughing about how Belgians manage to make beer part of every story.

After that, Pieter led us through narrow lanes I’d probably never find again. He pointed out a church where monks once brewed something “strong enough to make you see angels,” his words not mine. The second stop was this museum café tucked behind a garden wall — honestly, I wouldn’t have noticed it if he hadn’t waved us in. We sat on the terrace (under umbrellas), and he poured another round. This one tasted almost floral, which surprised me. A couple next to us started chatting in Dutch about the weather (classic), and for a second it felt like we were locals too.

The last place was quieter — some kind of peaceful courtyard right in the city center. You could hear distant bells and smell wet stone after the rain. We tasted two more beers here; I tried to take notes but gave up after the third glass because honestly, at that point it’s all about enjoying it. Pieter told us a story about medieval taxes on beer that made everyone groan, but it stuck with me for some reason. By the end, my little BeerWalk glass felt like a trophy. I still think about that rainy afternoon whenever I see it on my shelf back home.
