The experience
The tour begins at Rihanna Drive in Bridgetown, where you see the exterior of the modest home where the international superstar spent part of her childhood before rising to global fame. From there, the route climbs to Cherry Tree Hill, which rises 850 feet above sea level and opens onto panoramic views of the Scotland District: a region named after Scotland's patron saint because its rugged hills reminded early Scottish settlers of home. The road down is lined with West Indian mahogany trees, introduced after the Treaty of Paris in 1763, and gradually gives way to swaying sugar cane fields.
A scenic stop at Morgan Lewis Sugar Mill follows, built in 1727 and now one of only two functioning sugar windmills left in the world. The mill ground sugarcane commercially until 1947, when the Barbados National Trust took over its care. You photograph the structure from outside. The route then descends through Cattlewash to Bathsheba, a fishing village on the rugged east coast famous for the Soup Bowl: powerful Atlantic waves and coral rock formations that drew their name from local legend. St. John's Parish Church comes next, perched on a cliff overlooking the ocean. The church has stood on this site since 1645 and holds the tomb of Fernando Paleologus, a descendant of the Byzantine imperial family who settled in Barbados after his family lost Constantinople to the Turks.
The final stop is the Garrison Historic Area, established by the British in 1705 and expanded to 64 acres: the largest British garrison in the Caribbean. Many buildings were constructed with London bricks carried as ship ballast, and about 60 original structures remain. On November 30, 1966, Barbados raised its independence flag here under Premier Errol Walton Barrow. The tour concludes with a drive through Bridgetown, the capital and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, before returning you to the cruise port.
