The experience
You start with pickup from your Dhaka hotel at 8am and head first to the Banglar Tajmahal, a scaled replica of the Agra monument that sits in Sonargaon. From there the route moves through the medieval Goaldi Mosque, built in 1519 and one of the few surviving pre-Mughal structures in the old capital, then into Panam Nagar: a single street 600 meters long and 5 meters wide lined with 52 dilapidated but architecturally intact houses from the end of the 18th century, their facades still showing the urban character of the original township.
After lunch at a local restaurant, you board an engine-driven wooden boat for the Meghna River cruise. The Meghna is the widest river in Bangladesh, and the boat takes you to Nunertek Island in the middle of the channel, where you stop to watch the daily life of farmers and fishermen, including traditional Hilsa fishing methods, on a char (small river island) that is only reachable by water. The remote villages here have no road access, so the boat is how locals and visitors move through the landscape.
Your guide speaks English throughout the day and handles all entrance tickets. The Folk Art and Crafts Museum, set on 50 hectares with artificial lakes and landscaped grounds, closes Wednesdays and Thursdays. Panam City closes on Sundays. Comfortable walking shoes are recommended, and the tour is suitable for all fitness levels. Pickup and dropoff times may shift due to local traffic.
