The experience
What makes Dhaka's food scene worth a morning or afternoon is that the best dishes live in neighborhoods tourists don't usually wander into alone. This tour starts in the Dhaka University area, where you stop to taste fuchka, jhal muri, haleem and other items the area is known for. From there you move into Old Dhaka (the older, denser part of the city) to try biryani, village cakes, and fire betel leaf at spots a guide who knows the food culture can actually take you to. The whole thing moves at the pace of eating and walking between stops, not rushing.
You travel by auto-rickshaw or CNG, the small three-wheeled taxis that are how people actually move through these neighborhoods. Bottled water comes with the tour. The guide speaks English and Bengali, so if you speak either one, you can ask about what you're tasting and why it matters to the area. Because this is a food-focused tour, not a sightseeing one, the stops are chosen for the food itself. The guide knows which vendors and small restaurants are worth your time and which ones tourists usually miss.
Tours pause from mid-February through late March each year, and during Ramadan most food venues close during the day, so the tour doesn't run then. Many of the dishes on the route are meat-based, so if you're vegetarian, check with the operator about what will actually be available on the day you book.
