The Experience

The driver was supposed to meet us at the water fountain in front of the cruise terminal, and he was there—bright orange shirt, sign with his name on it—but running about five minutes late because another ship had docked early. That's the thing about shore excursions: the timing is tight, and you notice it right away. But once we were in the air-conditioned van, the historical driving tour of Nassau started immediately, and the pace felt right. We drove through the old city first, then headed straight to the Queen's Staircase, Nassau's most visited attraction. It's carved out of solid limestone by enslaved workers in the late 18th century, and the thing that gets you is the scale—102 feet of stone, but only 65 steps to climb because of how the angle works. The staircase takes you up to Bennett's Hill, the highest point in Nassau, where you can see Fort Fincastle or just stand there and take a photo. If climbing wasn't in the plan, the van could drive you to the top instead. We had 30 minutes at this stop, which was enough to climb, catch your breath, and browse the small straw market where locals sell handmade goods.

Then came the chocolate factory, which I wasn't expecting to enjoy as much as I did. Graycliff Chocolate Factory is run by the Garzaroli family, and the 20-minute tour shows you how they actually make it—not a video, not a display, but the real process. At the end you get to pick one piece from 17 different flavors, which sounds small until you're standing there trying to choose between dark rum and coconut. After that we drove west along Cable Beach, past the Baha Mar Casino and Hotel, and stopped at a cave on New Providence that used to be a pirate hideout and now has fruit bats living in it. Fifteen minutes to explore, take photos, maybe get a little closer to the bats than you expected. It's the kind of stop that wouldn't make a travel magazine cover but sticks with you because it's real and slightly strange.

The last part is Nirvanna Love Beach, which is where the snorkeling happens. It's a local spot, not a resort beach, with white sand and soft waves, and just offshore is a 40-acre coral reef called the Garden. The snorkeling equipment is included, and so is a light lunch and soft drink at the beach-side shack. There are restrooms, a shower, and beach chairs if you want to sit in the shade instead of getting in the water. Some people snorkel, some people swim, some people just sit and watch the water. The whole thing—from pickup at the terminal to drop-off back at the ship—takes about four hours, which is why it works as a half-day excursion. You're not rushed, but you're not hanging around either.
