The Experience

“You know, this place was a pirate mansion once,” our guide said as she handed me a glass of something bright and cold at the entrance to Graycliff Hotel. I nearly laughed — the place looks nothing like the rowdy Nassau I’d just left behind. Inside it’s all old wood, creaky floors, and that faint smell of cigars (the good kind). The staff just sort of glide around, nodding at you like you’re in on some secret. I kept thinking, is this really still in Nassau?

We wandered through the halls — past the wine cellar (I think they said it’s one of the biggest in the world? I lost count after hearing “over 250,000 bottles”). There’s this hush everywhere except for the kitchen, where someone was singing softly in patois while prepping lunch. The pool outside looked almost too blue, surrounded by palms and these giant white umbrellas that made everything feel cooler than it was. I dipped my feet in first because honestly, I wasn’t sure if I was supposed to just jump in or what — no lifeguard here, so you’re on your own.

Lunch came when we felt like it. Three courses, but not fussy — grilled fish with some sauce I couldn’t pronounce (Li laughed when I tried to say it), then something sweet and sticky for dessert. Eating outside with wet hair and bare feet felt weirdly fancy. People drifted between the water and their tables; nobody seemed rushed. At one point a breeze brought over the smell of chocolate from somewhere nearby (there’s a chocolatier here too — didn’t expect that), and for a second I forgot about my phone completely.

I don’t know if it was the food or just being away from all the cruise ship noise, but by late afternoon I felt lighter than when we’d arrived. If it rains they let you hang out inside instead — which honestly sounds cozy too. Anyway, if you want to see Nassau without actually seeing Nassau… this is probably how you do it.
