experience

What’s the experience like?

We were already two bites in before I realized how much I’d underestimated Bahamian food. Our guide, Patrice, handed me this warm conch fritter — crisp outside, soft and somehow ocean-sweet inside — and laughed when I tried to guess the spices. The street was busy but not rushed; someone nearby was selling guava duff out of a cooler and it smelled sugary in the heat. I’m not sure if it was the food or just being there with locals that made everything feel so… real? Anyway, we kept moving, ducking into little spots where people actually eat lunch, not just tourists with cameras.

At one point we stood under these huge trees near Parliament Square while Patrice pointed out the pastel buildings — pinks and yellows that looked faded but proud. She told us about old pirates (I half expected Johnny Depp to pop out), then led us up Mount Fitzwilliam to Government House. The view over Nassau Harbor was hazy-blue and wide open; you could hear gulls and the wind up there. There was a moment when everyone went quiet, just looking out. That stuck with me more than I expected.

I didn’t think I’d care much about architecture but walking through those grand old estates — especially the one that used to be a five-star hotel — felt like stepping into another time. The Buena Vista Estate had this cool stone floor that felt good after all that walking (bring decent shoes). We got a John Watling’s rum cocktail there, which tasted way better than anything I’ve mixed at home. Patrice said something about how locals toast to “sweet life” here; she made us try saying it in Bahamian dialect and honestly we all butchered it but nobody cared.
