The experience

The boat's transparent hull is the whole point: you stay dry and comfortable while the reef life moves beneath you. The 90-minute route takes you from Flamingo Bay Marina out to Rainbow Reef and then to the Papa Doc Wreck, now colonized by colorful marine life. Schools of tropical fish move through the water, sea fans sway in the current, and if conditions align, a shark or sea turtle passes underneath. Because there's no snorkeling involved, families with young children and anyone who doesn't want to get wet can see the same thing.

A live English-speaking guide narrates the journey and points out what's moving in the water as you pass over it. The boat carries bottled water on board, and you'll want to bring sunscreen and a hat: the water reflects the sun. Wear comfortable summer shoes or sandals since you'll be climbing in and out of the boat at the marina. The tour suits all fitness levels, though you do need to be able to step up into and out of the vessel on your own.
