The experience
The route starts with an early drive north from Baku, breaking for tea and local snacks before reaching Grizdahna. From there you hike to Griz Village along the historic "Eh Yolu" trail: a demanding route with a 1,160-meter elevation gain and steep ascents that require caution and suitable hiking boots. The trail is clearly marked but exposed, so it is not suitable for anyone afraid of heights. You stay overnight with a host family in Griz, where toilets and showers are basic outhouse facilities.
Day two takes you from Griz toward Khinalig, first hiking to Galaykhutad Village and stopping at Gurgur waterfall and the view into Kokosh Canyon. The Griz-Galaykhutad section requires moderate fitness to cross the canyon. The Galaykhutad-Khinalig trail that follows is easier. You have lunch in Galaykhutad, then continue to Khinalig for dinner and overnight stay with another host family. The villages themselves are the point: Griz and Khinalig are ancient settlements whose residents have lived on these mountains for centuries, and the homestays let you eat and rest as part of their daily life.
On the final day you do a short, easy ascent from Khinalig to nearby hills for a distant view of the village, then drive back to Guba in a Lada Niva with stops at several viewpoints. In Guba itself you visit the Genocide Memorial Complex, local mosques (women should wear headscarves, men should not wear shorts), and the Jewish Red Town, which reflects the city's history as a place where multiple religious communities coexisted. After lunch, the drive returns you to Baku. The guide speaks English throughout and carries snacks, dry fruits and bottled water for the trek.
