Vienna Night Photo Walk: Portrait Skills with Pro Photographer

Learn portrait photography under city lights on Vienna's hidden streets

A 60-minute night photography activity in Vienna's inner city where you walk with a professional photographer, a model and a makeup artist to learn portrait posing and lighting techniques. You'll shoot near Stephanplatz using a handheld LED light wand to create images in real locations, with no limit on the number of photos you take home. The guide speaks English, French or Romanian, and children from age 9 are welcome.

The experience

You meet near Wien Mitte Mall after sunset and walk a route locals know toward Stephanplatz, stopping several times to shoot. The photographer sets up each scene using an ICE LIGHT, a portable handheld LED light wand, to shape portrait images against Vienna's architecture and street atmosphere. You'll learn how to pose, how light changes the subject, and how to work with the model and assistant as they demonstrate techniques you can use in your own shots.

There's no cap on how many images you take or how many poses you try. The makeup artist is there if you want one, and the model works with you to show different posing situations that make ordinary locations look like a professional shoot. By the end you'll have walked Vienna's inner-city secrets, picked up portrait photography skills, and left with all the images from the night.

The ICE LIGHT is an ultra-portable handheld daylight LED light wand that lets you shape and direct light onto your subject in real time, creating portrait images that would otherwise be impossible in low light. You'll use it during the walk to light faces and figures against Vienna's buildings and streets.

Will I actually learn to take better photos, or is this mainly about having pictures taken of me?

Both happen. You learn posing, lighting and how to work with a model by watching and doing it yourself. The photographer teaches portrait skills throughout the walk, and you're shooting the entire time, not just being photographed.

What happens if I'm not comfortable being in front of the camera?

You can focus on shooting the model and the city instead. There's no requirement to be the subject. Many people come to learn the technical side and practice on the model and the Vienna streets.

How far do we actually walk, and is it difficult?

The walk covers Vienna's inner city on a path toward Stephanplatz with several stops to shoot. It's suitable for all fitness levels, and you're moving at a photography pace, not a hiking pace.
