Includes hotel pickup and skip-the-line entry.★ 4.75 (88)2h–6h€ 164View › I’ll admit, I almost bailed when I saw the edge at Mt Gaisberg — it’s steeper than you think. My hands were cold (even in June) and the wind kept flipping my hair into my mouth. Our pilot, Markus, just grinned and said, “Three steps, then you fly.” It sounded too simple. But suddenly we were running and the ground was gone. The city of Salzburg spread out below us like a map someone had drawn by hand — all those copper domes and the river curling through rooftops. I could smell pine from the forest patches below, mixed with something sharp that might’ve been Markus’s aftershave.
We drifted right past a hillside where Markus pointed out a meadow from The Sound of Music — he even hummed a few bars (badly). I tried to spot familiar places but honestly, my brain was too busy trying to process floating in silence except for the harness creaking and distant cowbells. It didn’t feel scary up there; more like being let in on some local secret. The flight lasted maybe 20 minutes? Hard to say — time got weird up there. Landing was softer than I expected; just a quick jog on grass and we were back on earth.
You meet up right at the top of Gaisberg (easy bus ride from Salzburg city center — free with your ticket), and they sort all the gear for you. If you want photos or videos, bring some extra cash (I caved). Bring gloves if it’s chilly — nobody warned me about numb fingers! Still, I keep replaying that first moment our feet left the mountain. I don’t think that feeling goes away soon.
