The experience
The walk begins outside the Stadttheater Klagenfurt, designed by the Viennese firm Fellner & Helmer, and moves into the surrounding historic streets where Renaissance urban planning, Renaissance town houses and later Baroque architecture sit side by side. You'll stroll through Ursulinengasse toward the Stadtpfarrkirche St. Egid, whose Baroque exterior took shape in the late 17th century and whose tower, completed in 1709, rises roughly 90 metres above the Old Town and is one of Klagenfurt's most recognisable landmarks.
Alter Platz comes next, one of the most atmospheric squares in central Klagenfurt, surrounded by historic façades, cafés and shops that show off the Renaissance character still defining the city centre. You'll pause at the Haus zur Goldenen Gans, documented as early as 1489 and marked by the gilded goose emblem above its entrance: one of the oldest surviving buildings in the city. Then the route leads to Neuer Platz and the Lindwurmbrunnen, the magnificent fountain at the city's heart. Created between 1583 and 1593 from a single block of local chlorite schist, the monument depicts the legendary dragon-like creature that became Klagenfurt's symbol. The figure of Hercules and the fountain basin were added in 1636. Your guide will share the legend behind the creature and the local stories that shape how Klagenfurt sees itself.
From there you'll walk to the Wörtherseemandl, a charming fountain tied to local folklore about how Lake Wörthersee came to be, then continue to the Landhaus, a significant Renaissance building from the late 16th century with two distinctive towers and an elegant inner courtyard. The tour concludes at Klagenfurt Cathedral on Domplatz, an imposing Baroque church dedicated to the Holy Trinity, where you can take in the façade and interior details before the walk ends in the heart of the Old Town.
