The experience

Hallstatt's compact layout makes it perfect for a self-guided exploration, and this scavenger hunt turns the walk into a puzzle. You start at the boat landing, open the app on your smartphone, and follow riddles and trivia challenges that lead you from one stop to the next. The first clue takes you to the Evangelische Pfarrkirche, whose distinctive spire marks the Protestant parish church where centuries of Hallstatt family history is carved into the pews and epitaphs. From there the app guides you through the Marktplatz, the market square where salt miners and tradespeople have gathered since the Middle Ages, and then to the Schiffstation Hallstatt-Lahn, the ferry landing that once connected the village to the wider world.

The riddles, photo tasks, and trivia challenges are what set this apart from a standard walking route. You compete for points within your group and can try to beat the city's high score. The app keeps you oriented with a live map showing marked locations, so you always know where you are. Because there's no guide and no fixed start time, you walk when you want, stop as often as you like, and take breaks without waiting for anyone else. The whole route covers easy terrain and takes around two hours, though you control the pace entirely.

You'll need a fully charged smartphone with active mobile data to start: download the Explorial app before you arrive and disable any VPN, as it can cause the app to disconnect. After booking, you receive a text message and booking-platform message with your six-digit game code. All the puzzles use public areas of the sights, so no entrance fees are required.
