The experience
Durnstein sits in the Wachau valley about two hours from Vienna, and this hike starts there. Your guide Karin meets you after the transfer and leads the group, never more than four people, through a landscape that feels almost Mediterranean despite being in Austria. The trail climbs through holm oak forests and past interesting rock formations, offering views over the rolling hills, the Danube River, and the village below. The walking takes about three hours depending on individual pace, with breaks built in.
The hike reaches its highest point and then descends toward the castle ruins of Durnstein, where King Lionheart was held centuries ago. The ruins are well-preserved and sit at a natural vantage point over the valley. After reaching them, the group heads down to one of the local wine taverns in the village for an optional lunch before the drive back to Vienna. The whole day, including travel time both ways, runs about seven hours.
You'll need moderate fitness and sure-footedness. The terrain includes steep sections and you should be free from vertigo. Wear hiking boots with good traction, bring at least a liter of water and a snack, and pack sun and rain protection. The tour may be cancelled in heavy rain. Most restaurants in the village take cash only, so bring some with you.
