The experience
You leave Linz in an air-conditioned vehicle and arrive in Český Krumlov after an hour on the road. A private licensed guide meets you and walks you through the castle's exterior, pointing out the Renaissance frescoes, the historic courtyards and the Cloak Bridge, where you get views down to the Vltava River and the Old Town spread below. The guide shares the castle's history and shows you the best angles for photographs.
From there you step into the Old Town itself, a UNESCO World Heritage site inscribed in 1992. The guide leads you through Svornosti Square, past St. Vitus Church, down Kájovská Street and Široká Street, across Barber's Bridge, through Latrán and the Castle Stairs to the Náplavka waterfront. Along the way you taste Bohemian goodies and local beer. The streets are narrow and the town is restored but still feels like a place people actually live in, not a museum. After roughly two hours of walking and tasting, the guide leaves you with two hours free. Your guide has already made a lunch reservation at a traditional Bohemian tavern based on what you told them you wanted to eat, so you can head straight there or wander the shops and artisan stores instead.
If you want to see inside the castle or catch a performance at the Baroque Castle Theatre, those are optional add-ons available from April through October. Your guide can arrange them. The whole day is eight hours door to door. Infants and small children can travel in a pram or stroller, and service animals are welcome.
