Sail to fringing reefs, snorkel without the crowds, paddle or kayak back

Snorkel the Whitsunday Islands on a 6-hour sail from Airlie Beach aboard a 60ft air-conditioned catamaran with a maximum of 29 guests. You choose how to explore: snorkel the reefs near Hayman Island, stand-up paddle board, or paddle a clear-bottom kayak to watch coral below. The boat includes premium snorkel gear, wetsuits, morning tea platters and a tropical buffet lunch; the skipper and host pick the anchorage based on the day's weather, choosing from spots like Langford Island, Bali Hi or Stonehaven Bay. Kids from age 5 are welcome, and you'll need to be able to swim to enter the water for any activity.

The Experience

Can you actually see the reef from a kayak with a clear bottom, or is that just marketing? On this one, yes — the clear-bottom kayak is real equipment included in the day, and it sits low enough that you're looking straight down at the coral without getting wet. The snorkel gear is premium (not the rental-shop basics), and the wetsuits and flotation noodles come with it, so you're not renting anything extra or guessing your size. You meet at 8:50am at Coral Sea Marina in Airlie Beach and depart at 9:15am; the boat returns by 3:30pm.

The catamaran is designed around comfort — air-conditioned interior with three bathrooms, a shaded seating area below deck, and a sundeck on top where you can bask between water time. There's a Jacuzzi onboard, and the skipper chooses the anchorage based on that day's weather and conditions, so you're not locked into one spot. Snorkel sites near Hayman Island are the target, but the exact location shifts. The boat holds a maximum of 29 people, which is the whole point: large tour boats to the Whitsundays can carry 200+, and the difference in how crowded the reef feels is real. You're eating freshly prepared food — morning tea platters (sweet and savoury) and a tropical buffet lunch with meats, salmon and vegetarian options — all made onboard each day, not reheated from a central kitchen.

One constraint that matters: you have to be able to swim to enter the water for snorkeling, SUP or kayak. If you can't swim, you're welcome to stay onboard, relax in the Jacuzzi, enjoy the sailing and sunbaking, but the water activities aren't an option. The same applies if you can't climb a ladder from the water back into the tender — that's the exit, and it's a requirement. Kids from age 5 are welcome; let the operator know their ages when you book. If you're arriving on a cruise ship, check your tender times carefully: the boat returns by 3:45pm, so if your last tender back to the ship leaves before that, this tour won't work for your schedule.

Top questions

What's the difference between snorkeling, the stand-up paddle board and the clear-bottom kayak on this trip?

All three are included and you pick which one you want to do — or switch between them during the day. Snorkeling puts you in the water with a mask and fins, looking at the reef face-on. The stand-up paddle board lets you paddle across the water and see down into it. The clear-bottom kayak sits lower and gives you a straight-down view of the coral without getting wet at all, so it's the option if you want to see the reef but stay dry.

How many people will be on the boat?

A maximum of 29 guests. Most large tour boats to the Whitsundays carry 150 to 200 people, so this size makes a real difference in how crowded the snorkel site feels and how much space you have onboard.

What time do I need to arrive and when does the boat get back?

Meet at 8:50am at Coral Sea Marina in Airlie Beach; the boat departs at 9:15am and returns by 3:30pm. The whole experience is 6 hours on the water.

Is the snorkel gear good quality, or do I need to bring my own?

Premium snorkel equipment is included — mask, fins and snorkel — along with wetsuits and flotation noodles in a range of sizes. You don't need to bring or rent anything for the water activities.

What if I'm not a strong swimmer?

You need to be able to swim to enter the water for snorkeling, SUP or kayak. If you can't swim, you're welcome to stay onboard and enjoy the sailing, sunbaking, Jacuzzi and the food — just let the operator know when you book so they can note it on your waiver.

Where exactly will we snorkel?

The skipper chooses the anchorage based on that day's weather and conditions, selecting from nearby spots including Langford Island, Bali Hi, Cockatoo Point or Stonehaven Bay. Snorkel sites are fringing reefs near Hayman Island, but the exact location changes day to day.
