The experience

I didn’t really expect to smell eucalyptus out on the water, but when we pulled away from Circular Quay, that’s what hit me first: mixed with coffee and the faint tang of sunscreen. Our guide (I think his name was Mark?) started pointing out bits of Sydney Harbour I’d only ever seen in postcards: the bridge looking chunkier up close, ferries zigzagging past us like they were late for something. We drifted by the Botanic Gardens and Manly Beach while people shuffled plates around for the BBQ lunch: honestly, I was more focused on not dropping my fork than on the skyline at first.

The real moment was when we passed through the Heads and everything changed. The water suddenly felt bigger, like it had its own mood. Mark got this excited look and started scanning for whale spouts. “Keep your eyes peeled!” he said, which made everyone crowd to one side (probably not what you’re supposed to do). When a humpback finally surfaced (just this huge shadow then a burst of white spray), someone near me actually gasped. I did too. The crew kept telling stories about how these whales almost disappeared from these waters. It’s wild to think there were once only a couple hundred left.

Lunch was simple but good: smoky sausages, bread rolls, salad. Nothing fancy, but eating outside with sea spray in your hair makes everything taste better anyway. There were kids wrapped up in jackets taking blurry photos, older couples sharing thermoses of tea. I tried to say “thank you” to one of the deckhands but totally lost my voice from all the wind and excitement.
