Step-by-step itinerary

Segway tour around Rottnest Island

  • Visit Parakeet and Little Parakeet Bays
  • Stop at Geordie Bay General Store

The experience

Two hours on a Segway takes you through terrain most visitors miss. You start at the Settlement office where the guide fits you with a helmet and runs through the basics: Segway handling takes minutes to learn. From there the route heads inland first, cutting through the less-visited salt lakes area where the pink lake appears each summer. The guide points out the flora and fauna along the way, and quokkas often cross the path.

After the interior, the tour swings to the coast and stops at Parakeet and Little Parakeet Bays, where you park the Segways and walk onto the beach to take in the northern coastline. The ride then passes Geordie Bay (there's a stop at the general store and cafe if you want a drink or snack) before heading past Longreach Bay's white sands to the Basin for a photo stop. The final stretch passes the lighthouse and Thomson Bay on the way back to the office.

Is this one for you?You ride the Segway yourself the whole way, so this suits anyone comfortable balancing on one and wanting to cover more ground than walking allows. The 2-hour pace means you see the interior and coast without a full-day commitment, which works well if you're splitting time between other island activities or catching a ferry back to Perth.

Top questions

Can children come?

Yes. Ticket types: Child (12 to 17 years). Children under 12 can't be included in the booking.

Can I ride a Segway if I've never used one before?

Yes. The tour includes full training on Segway use before you set out, and the guide walks you through everything you need to know. No prior experience is required.

What's the pink lake on Rottnest Island?

The inland salt lake turns pink every summer due to algae in the water. The tour passes through this area, so you'll see it if the timing is right during the warmer months.

Do we stop to see quokkas on this tour?

Quokkas live across the island and you may spot them along the route, but sightings are not guaranteed. The tour passes through areas where they're known to be, but wildlife encounters depend on the day and time.

Is there time to swim or spend a long time at the beaches?

The tour stops at Parakeet and Little Parakeet Bays for beach time, though the stop is built into the 2-hour schedule. You'll have time to walk the beach and take in the scenery, but it's not a dedicated swimming stop.

What's included in the tour price?

The tour includes the Segway, helmet, full training, guide commentary throughout, and a personal radio receiver so you can hear the guide clearly. Food and drinks are not included, but you can purchase them at the Geordie Bay General Store and Cafe during the break.
