The Experience

The tour leaves Perth heading north along Indian Ocean Drive, and the first stop sets the rhythm: Greenhead Three Bays Walks, then lunch at Dynamite Bay before the road opens up toward Geraldton. You'll stop at Hutt Lagoon Pink Lake, where the water shifts through pink and orange depending on the light and the algae blooming in it. By evening you're in Kalbarri, a small seaside town where the Murchison River meets the ocean, and you stay the night in a private studio room with an ensuite.

Day two takes you into Kalbarri National Park to see the Murchison Gorge and Z-Bend, where water has carved through sandstone over millennia—the walk is roughly 3 kilometres and abseiling is available for an extra cost. Nature's Window gives you a vantage point for photographs, then you drive to Shell Beach, made of millions of tiny white shells, before arriving at Monkey Mia by the afternoon. The dolphins come to the shore here most mornings, and you stay right by the beach at the Monkey Mia Dolphin Resort.

The dolphin experience happens early on day three—you get close and take photographs—then the morning is yours to walk the beaches or book an optional wildlife cruise to see dugongs, turtles, sharks and stingrays (at your own expense and requiring advance booking). At 11am, those not on the cruise gather to head to Eagle Bluff to look for sharks and turtles, then explore Denham's foreshore before the drive back to Geraldton, arriving around 6 or 6:30pm. The final day loops back toward Perth: you see the HMAS Sydney Memorial and Point Moore Lighthouse in Geraldton, walk the foreshore at Port Denison, stop in Jurien Bay and Cervantes for lunch at the Lobster shack with an optional tour of the lobster factory. The last stop is Nambung National Park, where thousands of limestone spires rise from golden sand in the Pinnacles Desert—you have time to walk through it and understand how the geology shaped it. The coach brings you back to Perth around 6:30pm.
