The experience
The helicopter lifts off as the sun breaks the horizon, and the Katherine River spreads below in a series of deep sandstone canyons. You pass over all 13 gorges in sequence, following the water as it cuts through the escarpments. The early light turns the rock walls gold and throws the ridges into sharp relief: the kind of angle and timing you cannot get from the ground. Hidden waterfalls appear in the side canyons, and the river bends through each gorge in turn.
Twenty minutes is the full flight time, which means you see the entire system without the day becoming a logistics puzzle. The tour runs only during the Dry Season, when the weather is stable enough for flying and the water levels let you see the gorge structure clearly. A live guide in English narrates the route, pointing out the geography and the features below as you move through each section.
