Step-by-step itinerary

Kayak tour through Melbourne city sights

  • Start kayak paddle through Melbourne city center
  • Enjoy views of skyline and historic bridges
  • Take short break at Docklands marina
  • Paddle back through city to starting point

The Experience

Paddle dips quietly into the Yarra and I’m already grinning — didn’t expect the city to sound this different from water. Our guide, Anna, hands me a bottle of water and checks if my life vest’s snug (it wasn’t). The river smells faintly green, with a whiff of coffee drifting over from somewhere upstream. We push off together, everyone a bit wobbly at first — except for Anna, who looks like she could do this blindfolded.

Melbourne’s skyline feels taller when you’re in a kayak. Glass towers above, trams rattling past on bridges overhead, someone waving down at us — no idea if it was for us or just habit. Anna points out the old Princes Bridge and tells a story about how rowers used to race here before sunrise. I’m still trying to keep my paddle straight but manage to catch most of it. There’s a weird comfort in moving slow while the city rushes by on both sides.

We stop for a break at Docklands marina. My arms are jelly but it’s worth it — boats bobbing gently, sunlight bouncing off the water in that blinding way only Melbourne can manage. A couple of locals stroll past with their dogs; one dog barks at our kayaks like we’re aliens. Someone offers me sunscreen (I’d forgotten mine), and we swap quick stories about where we’re from before heading back along the river. The last stretch is quieter — maybe everyone’s tired or just taking it in. I still think about that view under the bridge with all the city lights flickering on as we paddled back. Didn’t expect to feel so much part of Melbourne for an afternoon.
