The Experience

Li, our guide, grinned as she tightened my harness — “Don’t worry, you’ll love it,” she said, and I half-believed her. The group was mostly locals from Launceston plus a couple from Sydney who kept joking about drop bears (still not sure if that’s real). We started at Hollybank Treetops Adventure with this nervous excitement in the air — you could smell the eucalyptus and something earthy, like wet bark after rain. The training was quick but somehow comforting; they made sure we all clipped in right before we set off for the first platform.

I didn’t expect how quiet it would feel up there. Zipping between the trees, there’s this whoosh in your ears and then just green everywhere — blue gums stretching out below, sunlight flickering through the canopy. At one point Li pointed out a tiny bird I’d never have noticed otherwise (she called it a pardalote? I probably butchered that). You get these little facts about the forest as you go, but honestly, my brain was mostly focused on not looking down too much. The big one — Australia’s longest zipline at 400 meters — goes right over Piper River. My hands were sweating by then but wow, when you’re flying over that river, it almost feels slow because it’s so high up. I still think about that view sometimes.

The whole thing took around three hours, maybe less? We finished with digital photos — which is good because my own hands were too shaky for selfies. There were only about ten of us, so nobody got rushed or lost in the crowd. There’s something kind of funny about seeing everyone’s helmet hair at the end; we all looked mildly electrocuted and weirdly proud of ourselves.
