The experience
You leave Darwin's inner city early to make the most of the drive south along the Stuart Highway, passing through Adelaide River and Pine Creek on the way to Katherine. Your accredited outback guide provides historical and cultural commentary throughout the journey, explaining the stories of the Jawoyn people and the landscape you're moving through. The coach is air-conditioned and mid-sized, so the ride stays comfortable even as you cover the distance to Nitmiluk National Park.
The centerpiece is the NitNit Dreaming boat cruise through Katherine Gorge, where you travel through the middle of cliff faces 70 meters high. As the sun moves, its natural light shifts the colors of the rock formations and landscape continuously: no two moments look the same. After the cruise, you head to Edith Falls (Leliyn), where you can take a refreshing swim in the natural plunge pool or walk the escarpment lookout points. The order depends on boat cruise timing. The guided walks are short (1–2 kilometers) and suited to moderate fitness levels.
The day ends with a slow return to Darwin, arriving between 7:30pm and 8:00pm. Meals are not included, but you'll have chances to buy lunch and support local businesses along the way. If time allows, there's a rest stop on the return journey.
