The experience
Two hours on foot through Ipswich General Cemetery, on the edge of the city opposite a former mental asylum, with a guide who has run these tours since 1998. The cemetery itself is a morbid museum of forgotten graves, and the stories attached to them reach back through convicts, bushrangers and the city's darker corners. You hear about The Boy (a figure made of stone) the Ghost of the Walloon Saloon, Dan Kelly and a haunted castle that sits within the grounds.
The tour moves at a walking pace through the cemetery's paths and among its graves. You'll need a torch (a smartphone torch app works) and flat-soled enclosed shoes. Thongs, sandals and high heels mean entry is refused. The guide is experienced and speaks English, and a donation to Ghost Tours' Heritage Fund is included in the price.
Children from age 10 can join, though anyone under 15 must be accompanied by an adult. You'll need to show proof of full vaccination (or a valid exemption, or be under 16) at check-in. Without it, entry is refused and no refund is given. Service animals are allowed, and public transport options run nearby if you need them.
