The Experience

The day starts at Mount Lofty, where you get panoramic views of Adelaide and the surrounding landscape before the drive down into the Adelaide Hills. You'll pass through Stirling and Aldgate on the way—both leafy villages with heritage architecture—and then arrive at Beerenberg, a working farm that's been in the same family for six generations. The farm shop holds handcrafted jams, sauces and condiments made metres from where the ingredients are grown, and there are tastings to sample before you buy. If you're there during strawberry season, you can pick your own straight from the field at your own cost.

From the farm you move to Melba's, a chocolate factory housed in an old woollen mill in Woodside. The machinery inside—copper kettles, hand-poured moulds—is much the same as it was decades ago, and you watch the chocolate being made in front of you rather than through glass. There are complimentary tastings while you browse the shelves, which run from handmade truffles to nostalgic sweets. Then comes lunch at The Haus, one of Hahndorf's most popular spots, where you choose from four gourmet options made with local produce and can pair your meal with Adelaide Hills wine or one of their German beers on tap.

After lunch, the schedule stops. You get a full two hours to explore Hahndorf at your own pace—no group to keep up with, no timed stops. Founded in 1839, it's Australia's oldest surviving German settlement, and the main street still shows it: stone cottages, old pubs, and elms planted by the original settlers. You can wander through galleries and craft studios, stop for coffee or a German pastry, browse leather and woodwork shops, or simply sit in the sun and watch the street. The drive back to Adelaide takes under half an hour.
