The experience
I didn’t think I’d get nervous about snorkeling, but as we left Cairns and the city faded into that pale blue haze, my stomach did a little flip. The boat ride out to the Outer Great Barrier Reef took about 90 minutes: long enough for me to second-guess my wetsuit skills (they’re tighter than you expect). Our guide, Emma, had this way of making everyone laugh about foggy goggles and fish names I still can’t pronounce. The reef itself was nothing like those glossy postcards: more alive, less tidy.
