The experience

Check-in happens 30 minutes before departure for a pre-departure briefing, then you board the helicopter for your flight. The route takes you over Green Island first, then across the Great Barrier Reef itself. On low tide, Vlasoff Sand Cay and Upolu Sand Cay become visible from above: exposed sandbars that shift the reef's appearance depending on the day. A live guide provides commentary throughout, pointing out what you're seeing and answering questions as you fly.

Manta rays, turtles and other marine life sightings are common from this altitude. If you're flying during the winter months, there's a chance of spotting whales migrating through the waters below. The flight lasts the full 30 minutes airborne, giving you time to photograph the reef's patterns and take in the scale of it. Something that's hard to grasp from the water or the shore.

All scenic flights operate on a shared basis, so you'll be flying with other passengers in the same helicopter. Bookings of up to six passengers depart from the Pier Heliport in Cairns. Larger groups use the General Aviation Airport instead. The price includes GST, fuel surcharge and the informative commentary during flight.

Is this one for you? You're flying with other passengers on a shared helicopter, so this suits anyone who wants to see the reef's full geography without the cost of a private charter. The 30-minute duration fits a morning or afternoon slot in a Cairns itinerary without eating up a full day.

Top questions

Can children come?

Yes. Ticket types: Infant (under 3): free.

What happens if it rains?

It may be canceled due to bad weather. If that happens, you're offered another date or a refund. Free cancellation up to 24 h before the start.

What's the difference between the sand cays you see on this flight?

Vlasoff Sand Cay and Upolu Sand Cay are only visible from above on low tide, when the sandbars emerge from the water. Green Island and Fitzroy Island are permanent islands you'll see regardless of tide. The changing visibility of the sand cays means each flight shows a slightly different view of the reef system.

How often do you actually see marine life like manta rays and turtles from the helicopter?

Sightings of manta rays, turtles and other marine life are not uncommon on these flights, though spotting them depends on conditions and where they happen to be that day. Whales are a seasonal possibility during the winter months when they migrate through the area.

Do I need to arrange my own transport to the heliport in Cairns?

Yes, you'll need to arrange your own way to the heliport. Hotel pickup and drop-off from Cairns and Beaches hotels are not included with this tour, so plan your transport to arrive 30 minutes before your scheduled departure time.

What happens if the weather is bad on the day of my flight?

Tour and aircraft substitutions are subject to pilot discretion, weather and air traffic control. If conditions prevent your flight, your booking can be rescheduled or refunded according to the cancellation policy: 48 hours' notice gets a full refund, 24–48 hours gets 50% back, and cancellations inside 24 hours receive no refund.

Are there weight restrictions I should know about before booking?

Individual passenger weights and carry-on luggage must be declared at booking. The maximum single seat payload is 130kg.
