The Experience

We arrived just as the late afternoon breeze started to pick up, the kind that carries a hint of salt from the Broadwater. The marina behind the Marriott was quiet except for the soft clinking of rigging from nearby yachts. Our host greeted us with a smile and a red carpet rolled out right to the edge of the water—honestly, it felt a bit surreal. The gondola itself looked almost too plush to step into, with thick sheepskin covers on the seats and gentle music already playing inside. There was this faint scent of leather mixed with something sweet—maybe the wine waiting on ice.

Once we settled in, our guide offered to snap a few photos (which turned out way better than our usual selfies). The cheese platter arrived next: creamy brie, sharp cheddar, some local blue, plus strawberries and crackers stacked just so. As we pulled away from the dock, glasses in hand, the city faded behind us. We drifted along the Nerang River, gliding past waterfront mansions with gardens that looked straight out of a magazine. At one point, we passed a couple fishing off their jetty who gave us a little wave—felt like we were getting a peek into another world.

The real highlight was cruising through Surfers Paradise. By then, dusk had settled in and the skyline flickered to life—reflections rippling across the water. It’s quieter out there than you’d expect; you mostly hear the soft hum of the gondola and the occasional laughter from balconies overhead. We didn’t want it to end, honestly. When we finally looped back to the marina after an hour and a half, I realized I’d barely checked my phone once.
