Gold Coast Kayak & Snorkel: Hand-feed tropical fish
Paddle, snorkel, feed fish, eat breakfast on sand
A morning kayak and snorkel adventure on the Gold Coast's Broadwater combines paddling to Wavebreak Island, snorkeling with tropical fish you can hand-feed, and a light breakfast served at the water's edge. The guides provide full instruction and safety briefing, so first-timers and anyone with low fitness levels can join; dolphins and stingrays occasionally appear along the route. Choose between a standard tour or a family pass.
Step-by-step itinerary
Kayak, snorkel, and breakfast adventure
- Meet guides and receive safety briefing
- Launch onto calm estuarine waters
- Paddle to Wavebreak Island
- Snorkel and explore marine life
- Enjoy light continental breakfast on beach
- Paddle back to shore watching for dolphins
The Experience
You meet your guides at the launch point, collect your kayak and snorkeling gear, and get a full safety and paddling briefing—no experience needed. The calm estuarine waters of the Broadwater are where you'll spend the next few hours, and the guides brief you on what to watch for: stingrays, seabirds, and the occasional dolphin that drifts through this stretch. You paddle out at an easy pace, with your guides leading and staying alert to the water around you.
At Wavebreak Island, you arrive at a sheltered snorkel spot thick with subtropical fish. You slip into the water and explore, or stay on the sand while your guide shares marine facts and stories about the islands and their environment. The hand-feeding happens right at the surface—the fish come to you, and you feed them directly from your hand. It's the kind of moment that stays with you after the tour ends.
Back on the beach, a light continental breakfast waits at the water's edge, served with views across the Broadwater. You eat, rest, and let the morning settle. Then you paddle back to shore with your guides, staying alert because dolphins and other surprises have a habit of appearing on the way home. The whole experience runs about three hours from start to finish.

Is this one for you?The three-hour morning timing and calm estuarine waters suit families with children aged 6 and up, first-time kayakers, and anyone with lower fitness levels—guides teach paddling from scratch and the pace stays relaxed. If you're looking for a full-day expedition or want to explore open ocean, a longer coastal tour would be better suited.

Can I hand-feed the fish if I've never snorkeled before?
Yes. The hand-feeding happens in shallow water right at the surface, and your guide shows you how. You don't need snorkeling experience—the guides teach you everything, and you can stay on the sand if you prefer and still watch the fish.
What happens if dolphins show up while we're paddling?
Dolphins occasionally appear on the Broadwater, especially on the paddle out or back. Your guides keep watch and will point them out if they do, but sightings aren't guaranteed. Stingrays and seabirds are more common along the route.
Is the breakfast included, or do I need to bring my own food?
A light continental breakfast is included and served on the beach at Wavebreak Island. You should bring water and sunblock; drinks beyond what's served aren't included.
What's the difference between the standard tour and the family pass?
Both follow the same route and include the same activities—paddling, snorkeling, hand-feeding fish, and breakfast. The family pass is priced for groups traveling together with children aged 6 and up.
Do I need to know how to swim to join this tour?
You don't need to know how to swim, but you must tell your guide if you can't. Everyone wears a lifejacket, and if you're not a swimmer, you'll wear it at all times during the tour for safety.
What do I need to bring or wear?
Wear swimwear and footwear that can get wet (thongs or sandals work). Bring water, sunglasses, a hat, a towel, and sunblock. The guides provide all kayaking and snorkeling gear, lifejackets, and masks.
