The experience
You leave Pippies Beachhouse in Rainbow Beach at 7am, take a 20-minute barge ride to Inskip Point, and drive straight onto 75-mile beach in your tag-along 4×4. The first stop is Lake McKenzie (sapphire water ringed by some of the world's purest sand), where you swim before heading inland to Central Station Rainforest. Lunch happens at Wanggoolba Creek, where a boardwalk cuts through the rainforest. The guide walks you through the island's history before you drive back to the beach and on to Pippies camp. At sunset, you climb Corrigin Sandblow (Pippies has exclusive access) and cook a BBQ together with the group, sleeping at the campground that night.
Day two starts early with toast and cereal, then you drive north to Champagne Pools: natural rock pools where waves crash in and create the bubbly effect. A short drive brings you to Eli Creek, where you walk a boardwalk with a rubber ring and float down 4 million litres of fresh water pumping into the sea every hour. The Maheno shipwreck comes next, a rusty hull stranded against coloured sands as the sun lowers. You stop briefly at the Pinnacles on the way back to camp. Another night at the campground, another group dinner.
Your last morning is simple: breakfast, then a moderate drive down the beach to Lake Wabby. A 40–45 minute walk through bush and sand leads to Hammerstone Sandblow and the deepest lake on the island. After lunch on the beach, you hunt for the Eugarie (a local legend) before heading back to the barge. You arrive at Rainbow Beach between 1pm and 4:30pm, depending on the tides. The guide handles all driving logistics. You choose whether to take the wheel or ride along.

You can opt to drive one of Pippies' 4×4 vehicles yourself throughout the tour, or stay as a passenger. Either way, you visit the same stops and stay at the same campground. The guide leads the convoy and navigates. You just decide whether you want the wheel.
What do I need to bring for the camping nights?
Pippies provides a sleeping bag and pillow for both nights at the campground. You'll want warm layers (island nights cool down), a torch, toiletries, and sun protection. Free hot showers are available at the campground.
How much of the tour is actually driving on the beach versus walking?

Do I need a 4×4 driving license or special experience to drive the tag-along vehicle?
You need a valid driver's license. The guide will brief you on beach and sand driving before you take the wheel. No prior 4×4 experience is required, though moderate fitness and comfort with off-road terrain help.
What wildlife might I see on K'gari?
The guide will help you spot wild dingoes, which roam the island. Birdlife is common around the lakes and creeks. You're also likely to see monitor lizards and other native animals, especially in the rainforest sections.
