The experience

Denmark sits in the Great Southern wine region, and this tour moves through it on a route built around tasting rooms and makers rather than a fixed itinerary of sights. You start with hotel pickup in Albany and travel through lush bushland where karri trees tower overhead. The landscape itself is part of the day. The guide provides local commentary as the van moves between venues, so you're not walking between stops. You're driven to each tasting.

The first stop is The Lake House, where you taste wines in The Shed, a purpose-built tasting room, and sample their Vinofood range of condiments, sauces, jams, chocolates and preserves. Next is a cheese maker where you taste multi-award-winning handmade cheese and more wines, then sit down to a shared platter lunch with more than eight cheeses from their range, cured meats, salad, bread and condiments. After lunch comes ice cream and a tasting of mead, an ancient liqueur made with contemporary flavors. The final stop is a chocolate maker on the premises. You can walk through their gardens and watch the handmade chocolates being made before heading back to Albany.

The day runs 6.5 hours total, which means you're back by mid-afternoon. Bring layers: Denmark can be cooler than Albany. If you have dietary requirements or prefer not to drink alcohol, let the operator know at booking. Special dietary options are available, and most credit cards are accepted for any purchases you want to make at the venues.
