The Experience

I didn’t really believe we’d see them — wallabies just hanging out on the sand at Cape Hillsborough, like it was the most normal thing in the world. But there they were, shapes moving in the blue-grey light as our little group shuffled off the bus, still half asleep. Our guide Rob handed out bug spray (thank god) and pointed to where the tide had left a mess of mangrove pods. That’s what draws them in, he said, and I guess he was right because suddenly there were more than I could count.

The air smelled salty and a bit earthy, not sharp like city mornings. The sun came up slow — honestly, I almost missed it because I was too busy watching a kangaroo scratch its ear with that weirdly human look they get. Someone tried to whisper but ended up laughing instead; it felt contagious. Rob told us how these animals have been coming here for generations, and I remember thinking how lucky we were to catch this exact moment, even if my shoes were already full of sand.

Breakfast was yoghurt and muesli on a blanket by the trees — simple but somehow perfect after being awake since before dawn. There was apple juice too, which tasted colder than usual (maybe just because my hands were freezing). We talked about how close we’d gotten to the wallabies. I still think about that view: orange sky over the water, animals hopping around like they owned the place — which they kind of do. The ride back was quiet; everyone just sort of stared out the window or dozed off. Not sure if anyone else noticed how soft the light looked through those rainforest trees.
