The Experience
I’ll admit, my hands were already sweaty before we even got strapped in for the Giant Swing at Skypark Cairns. There’s this moment when you’re dangling up there, feet just sort of swinging in the air, and you can smell the wet earth from the rainforest below. Our guide, Jamie, grinned and said “don’t look down—look out.” I tried, but curiosity won. The view really does stretch all the way to the Great Barrier Reef, kind of hazy and blue on the horizon. My friend kept nervously giggling and I probably squeezed her arm too hard.
The actual swing? It’s fast—like, blink-and-you-miss-it fast. You shoot forward over the treetops and suddenly every sound disappears except for wind in your ears and someone (maybe me) yelling something not printable. I didn’t expect how smooth it would feel, or how much you notice tiny things—the sticky harness straps, a bird darting past right as we dropped. Afterward, we watched our video (included with the ticket), and honestly I look ridiculous but also so happy. Even Jamie laughed at my face.
There were families waiting their turn—one little kid kept waving at us from below—and a couple who did it tandem style. The staff explained all the safety stuff without making it boring; they’ve clearly done this a million times but still seemed genuinely excited for each group. It was humid that day but up high there’s a coolness you don’t get on the ground. My legs felt wobbly after but in a good way. I still think about that rush sometimes when I hear wind in trees back home.
