The Experience
Cairns Aquarium sits on the waterfront with over 16,000 reef and rainforest creatures across 71 living habitats. Your admission ticket gets you into the main aquarium to explore 10 different Tropical North Queensland ecosystems at your own pace. The Turtle Hospital tour runs separately as a guided 30-minute experience, taking you behind the scenes to the rehabilitation centre where the facility cares for injured and sick sea turtles.
The tour is the educational core of the visit. You'll meet the turtles currently in care, learn what brought them to the centre—boat strikes, fishing line entanglement, disease—and see how the volunteer team treats and prepares them for release back into the ocean. The guide walks you through the hospital spaces and explains the work of this not-for-profit operation. After the tour ends, you have the rest of your admission time to walk the main aquarium galleries and watch the reef tanks, the rainforest section, and the other creatures on display.
The whole experience runs 2 to 3 hours depending on how long you spend in the aquarium after the tour. Public transport stops nearby, and the site is fully wheelchair accessible with prams and strollers welcome. No separate booking is needed for the tour—it's included with your general admission ticket.
What’s included
- General admission to Cairns Aquarium with access to 71 living habitats and 10 Tropical North Queensland ecosystems.

Operated by Cairns Aquarium
Is this one for you?The 30-minute tour runs as part of your admission visit, so you're not committing to a full guided experience—you get the behind-the-scenes access and education, then explore the main aquarium galleries on your own time. This works well if you want to learn the turtle story without a structured itinerary for the whole day.
