The Experience

Someone flicked their torch up under their chin — I think it was our guide, Pete — and for a second I forgot we were just outside a hotel on Queen Street, not in some old gothic novel. The air felt heavier than usual, like the city was holding its breath. We stopped by Victoria Bridge just as a bus rumbled past, headlights making everything look washed out and strange. Pete told us about The Tyrant of Moreton Bay — he didn’t sugarcoat anything. The stories weren’t just spooky; they were tangled up with real history and old Brisbane tragedies. Someone asked if he believed in ghosts himself and he just grinned, said something about “the city remembering what people forget.” I liked that.
