I didn’t, honestly, until I found myself strapping on a helmet and climbing onto the back of this bright yellow trike. Our rider—Mick—handed me the Bluetooth headset, grinned, and said, “Just shout if you want to stop for a photo or need to ask anything.” That was new. The engine rumbled under us as we rolled out past the marina; I could hear seagulls squabbling somewhere overhead and caught this weird mix of sunscreen and diesel from the docks.
The road climbed up into the hills fast—one minute you’re weaving between palm-shaded streets, next thing you’re looking down at Shute Harbour with its boats bobbing around like someone shook a snow globe. Mick pointed out some battered trees still showing scars from Cyclone Debbie (“You should’ve seen it right after,” he said), and I tried to imagine all that wind roaring through here. We stopped at one lookout where the breeze nearly knocked my hat off. I just stood there for a second breathing in eucalyptus and sea spray—didn’t expect it to hit me like that.
Later we zipped past cane fields—so green they almost hurt my eyes—and ducked into Conway National Park. There was this sudden hush when we pulled over by Cedar Creek Falls; only frogs making noise, water trickling somewhere close. At George’s Diner (it’s got those shiny red booths like old movies), we grabbed burgers and swapped stories with a couple locals who’d just come in from fishing. Mick teased me about my Queensland accent attempt (I don’t have one), which made everyone laugh too loud for such a small room.
I kept thinking about how open everything felt out here—like you could just keep riding forever if you wanted. On the way back toward Airlie Beach, I watched sunlight flicker over the cane as we cruised past Hydeaway Bay. It wasn’t perfect—the wind tangled my hair into knots and I probably had sunscreen in my eye half the time—but there was something honest about that ride that stuck with me longer than any postcard view ever could.
