The Experience

We’d barely climbed into the bright yellow jet boat at Airlie Beach when our pilot, Dave, grinned back at us and shouted over the engine, “Hold on tight!” I was wedged between my cousin and a kid who looked both terrified and thrilled. The sun was already sharp on the water but you could still smell that early saltiness — kind of briny, mixed with sunscreen. Dave didn’t waste time; we shot forward so fast I lost my breath for a second, then everyone started laughing (even the kid). I tried to wave at someone on the marina but nearly lost my hat — rookie mistake.

What surprised me wasn’t just the speed — though yeah, it’s wild — but how much you see from out there. We spun past these crazy big houses along the shore (Dave called them “millionaire mansions,” which made us all snort), then slowed down near a patch of calm where he pointed out a sea turtle bobbing up. He said sometimes you get dugongs or rays too. The water changed color every few minutes — deep blue to that weird greenish glass when we drifted. My hands were shaking from holding on so tight but honestly, it felt good.

The best part? Those 360 spins where you think you’re going to fly right off (you won’t). There’s this spray of warm water and everyone screams or swears or just laughs until their voice cracks.
