The experience
What does it take to abseil down a 30-metre overhang? This class starts you with a 5-metre drop to teach the technique, then builds through 15-metre abseils before you tackle the overhanging pitch that defines the morning. Your instructor walks you through each step, so there's no guessing. Just the mechanics of the rope, the harness and how your body moves through space. By midday you've done the hardest part of the day and earned the break.
After lunch you travel north to Grose Valley, where the canyon narrows and steepens. Five more abseils, each up to 20 metres, drop you deeper into the canyon walls. A 45-minute walk with views back to the car closes the day. The whole experience runs eight hours and covers ground that looks dramatic but stays manageable. The canyon is steep and narrow, but the access is straightforward enough that the focus stays on the abseiling itself, not on scrambling to reach it.
You'll need reasonable fitness and good footwear (running shoes or hiking boots) plus a litre of water and sensible outdoor clothing. The operator provides all the technical gear: helmets, harnesses, ropes. Pick your gourmet lunch from a menu that includes satay chicken, Vietnamese chicken, turkey, roast beef, salami, falafel, or vegan and vegetarian options. Email your choice and any dietary needs at least 48 hours ahead. National Park fees are included.
