The Experience

“You see that mountain?” our guide Arman pointed across the fields as we pulled up to Khor Virap. Mount Ararat just sat there, half hidden by morning haze — honestly, I’d seen it on postcards but it feels different in person. The monastery itself is all rough stone and echoes; you can actually climb down into the old dungeon (I hesitated—claustrophobia, but did it anyway). It smells cool and earthy down there. Some local women were lighting candles and humming softly — I didn’t expect that kind of hush. When we came back up, the sun was already getting sharp and a stray dog followed us to the van like he knew we had snacks.

The drive toward Noravank was bumpier than I thought — lots of twists through these red cliffs dotted with caves. Arman told us stories about Saint Gregory (I admit, I zoned out for a second watching a hawk circle above). Noravank itself is dramatic: stacked stone churches right against the rock face. You have to climb these narrow steps to get to the upper chapel—my knees cracked but nobody seemed to mind. A couple from Yerevan offered us dried apricots while we caught our breath. The air smelled faintly of thyme and dust.

I didn’t know Armenia had such old winemaking roots until we reached Areni village. The “Hin Areni” wine factory looks modern outside but inside it’s all barrels and that sweet grape smell. We tried three kinds — my favorite was this deep red one, though I probably mispronounced its name (Li laughed when I tried to say it in Armenian). Right after, we walked into Birds-Cave where they found that ancient shoe — 5,500 years old! It’s dark and cool inside; you can almost imagine people making wine here centuries ago. There’s something grounding about touching those cave walls.
