The experience

The day starts with a short stop at an arch with views toward Mount Ararat, then moves to Geghard Monastery in the Azat River Gorge. The complex is partly carved directly into the basalt rock face. The name Geghard comes from the Armenian word for the spear that pierced Christ's side, which the monastery housed for five centuries. The oldest chapel dates to the 12th century. The main church, Surp Astvatsatsin, was built in 1215 and its adjoining vestibule with nine arches followed a decade later. The stone carvings throughout are detailed enough to reward a slow walk.

Garni Temple comes next: a 1st-century masterpiece of classical Hellenistic architecture built by King Tirdates I as a shrine to Mihr, the Armenian sun god. It stands alone on a hilltop and is one of the few pagan temples still standing in the region. After Garni, the tour includes a short walk along the shore of Lake Sevan, Armenia's largest lake, which sits 1,900 meters above sea level. The water level has changed dramatically since the 1930s when it was diverted for irrigation and power generation. What was once an island is now a peninsula.

The final stop is Sevanavank Monastery, a 9th-century complex on a rocky outcrop overlooking the lake. All entrance tickets to these three sites are included in the price. The tour covers 220 km total and lasts 7 hours. You travel in an air-conditioned vehicle with bottled water on board. Pickup and drop-off happen at your Yerevan hotel or any location in the city. Drivers are non-smokers and experienced. Guides speak English or Russian depending on your choice at booking.

Is this one for you?Choose the option with a guide if you want context for the carvings and history at each site. The tour works just as well without one if you prefer to explore at your own pace. Groups of up to eight travel together, so a family or small group books as a single party without splitting up.
