The experience
The Tulum Valley, 600 meters high and ringed by the Andes, produces everything from table wines to fine spirits in sandy, permeable soils that suit viticulture. This tour takes you to three of the province's main producers. A professional guide meets you at your hotel and drives you south in an air-conditioned vehicle to the first stop, where you begin to see how the wines are made, from the vineyards through the underground cellars and oak barrels to the finished bottle.
Viñas de Segisa, the first boutique winery in San Juan, occupies a renovated hall from the early 1900s with original underground cellars. You walk through the grounds, learn the elaboration process, and taste wines chosen to show you what to notice. The second winery, a family business surrounded by mountains and fed by meltwater from the Andes, makes wines, sparkling wines, balsamic vinegar and organic vinegar from its own orchard. At the third stop, a sommelier leads the tasting in an elegant wine bar, walking you through the stages of winemaking in different styles and teaching you the details that matter when you assess a wine. The tasting concludes your visit, and the guide returns you to your hotel.
The wineries available may shift depending on the season and harvest schedule. Wine tastings are optional. If you buy wine at the warehouse, the tasting fee is credited toward your purchase.
