The Experience

We were already bouncing along Ushuaia’s edge when I realized how close the wild gets here — it’s just fifteen minutes out of town and suddenly you’re in it. Our guide, Martín, double-checked our boots and handed out trekking poles with a grin that said we’d need them. The van door slid shut behind us and the morning was that sharp kind of cold where your breath feels heavier than your backpack. I could smell wet earth before we even started moving up the trailhead toward the Vinciguerra Glacier — which I’d only seen in photos until now.

The first hour or so is all lenga forest — spongy peat bog underfoot, branches creaking overhead, Martín pointing out these tiny orange fungi clinging to fallen logs. He told us the word for them in Spanish but honestly I forgot it right away (I blame the altitude). We crossed a stream on some wobbly planks and my friend nearly lost her boot to the mud — everyone laughed except her. There’s this silence between jokes though, just wind and distant water. Patagonia really knows how to make you feel small.

I didn’t expect Laguna de los Tempanos to look so blue against all that gray rock. We stopped for sandwiches by the shore — ham and cheese never tastes as good as when you’ve earned it climbing 600 meters. The glacier itself is another hour past the lagoon; closer up, you can see these deep blue cracks running through the ice. Martín explained how moulins form (it’s basically glacier plumbing) while we tried not to slip on loose stones. My hands were numb but I kept touching everything anyway — rough lichen, icy water at my fingertips. On the way back down my legs felt like jelly but in a good way, if that makes sense.
