The Experience

Pickup happens early from your Salta hotel, and the drive takes you into a 95-mile-long mountain valley carved by the Río Grande. The Quebrada de Humahuaca was once an Incan caravan road, then a colonial trade route, and later a battleground in the Argentine War of Independence — the landscape itself holds that layered history. As you travel north, the rock formations shift through colors that change with the light: serrated canyons, striped hillsides, and formations that look sculpted rather than weathered.

Purmamarca comes first, a small village where you walk past a church with a roof of organ-pipe cacti and browse the craft market for jewelry and woven rugs. Just outside town stands Cerro de los Siete Colores (Seven Colors Hill), a hillside striped in cream, green, rose and deep plum — it dominates the skyline and is the most photographed sight in the valley. From there, you continue to Tilcara, where you climb a hilltop to see the pre-Incan fortress ruins of Pucará and look out over the valley, then visit the town's archeological museum. At Huacalera, you cross the Tropic of Capricorn and stop at a sundial marker for photos; nearby, La Pollera de la Colla Hill adds another layer of striped color to the landscape.

Humahuaca is your northernmost stop and the largest town in the quebrada. You walk past white colonial buildings on cobblestoned streets, climb steps to the Monument of Independence built in 1950, and visit the local cathedral to see more paintings from the Cuzco School — an artistic tradition that blended indigenous and Spanish colonial styles. Lunch is on your own here; your guide can recommend places to eat. On the return south, you pass La Paleta del Pintor (Painter's Palette), a series of triangular rock formations striped in rose, green and ocher near Maimará. The final stretch follows the narrow, winding Route 9 through subtropical vegetation, mountain passes and small settlements before you arrive back at your hotel in Salta.
