The experience
The walk starts in Puerto Madryn's city center and moves south along the coast, following the economic and historical landmarks a local guide points out as you go. You'll see the Monument to the Tehuelche Indian at a high viewpoint, then continue to Punta Este, where at low tide you can spot the wreck of the Folias and the distinctive restingas: the cobblestone beaches that define Patagonian geography here.
Punta Loma reserve is the oldest protected area in the province, and sea lions live there year-round alongside nesting birds. You walk through the reserve to Cerro Avanzado, a low hill three kilometers further south, where the views open onto the seabed geography and the steppe vegetation that makes Patagonia distinct. This is where the tour ends with a picnic: homemade empanadas, Malbec wine, and juice or water, all eaten at the viewpoint itself.
A bilingual guide (English or Spanish) leads the group. Minivan or minibus transport depends on group size, or a car with a guide-driver for up to four passengers. Infants can travel in a pram or stroller, and small children sit on an adult's lap. The pace is easy and the terrain is walkable for all fitness levels.
